A V8 isolate is a lightweight sandbox within the V8 JavaScript engine. Each Worker request gets its own isolate, an independent execution context with its own memory that shares the same V8 engine process.

It is not a container, a VM or a Docker process, and it has no OS: it is only a V8 sandbox, so it starts in microseconds, not milliseconds. That is why it is so fast and so limited.

It is single-threaded, because V8 is: each isolate uses one thread, and a PoP runs many isolates in parallel across multiple V8 engine instances to handle concurrency.

Isolates share resources on the same engine, which is why Workers are so limited. If one isolate hogs the CPU, the others in the same engine stall, so CPU time is capped to keep every request fair and the PoP responsive.

Against Lambda containers, isolates are faster to start (near-zero cold start) and lighter, but they cannot do heavy compute or access the filesystem. Containers are heavier but more capable.
