Upstash is a cloud service that provides serverless Redis and Kafka as an external API, so that an app reaches them over HTTP and nothing runs inside the app's own server.

It is Redis-compatible, covering caching, rate limiting, session storage and pub/sub, all through a REST API or the native Redis protocol.

It is designed for serverless: it scales to zero, charges per request and needs no persistent connection, since it works over HTTP, which suits Vercel Functions and Workers.

It also offers QStash (a message queue) and Workflow (durable execution), which overlap with the territory of Inngest and Trigger.dev.
