TCO prevents a narrow hardware discount from masquerading as system savings. It also depends on time horizon and utilization: an expensive cluster used continuously may beat cheap idle capacity, while a low API rate can become costly at sustained volume.

Purchase price is the ticket. TCO is the entire trip, including the hotel you forgot to budget.
