A seed phrase is 12 to 24 words (the BIP-39 standard) that encode random entropy in human-readable form, and it is the wallet itself: anyone who has it controls all the derived accounts.
The entropy comes from the device's random number generator (the OS plus user interactions, for unpredictability), and the wallet's keys are derived from it in a fixed chain.

From the master key each account is then derived along a structured derivation path, m/44'/60'/0'/0/x.
The seed phrase is independent from the device password: the password is a local convenience lock, the seed phrase the ultimate master backup.
