S3 is Amazon's object storage service, the original and most widely used cloud storage, whose API virtually every provider copies.
It stores files (objects) of any size and type in buckets. Its price is storage plus requests plus egress (bandwidth), and the egress fees are the controversial part, because serving files to users gets expensive at scale. S3 is so ubiquitous that S3-compatible became a standard: tools built for S3 work with R2, MinIO, Backblaze B2 and others. R2 keeps the same API and tools and charges no egress at all, Cloudflare's play to make S3 users switch by removing the most hated part of S3 pricing.
