PostHog is a product analytics and feature flag service reached as an external API: a JS snippet or SDK in the application sends events (page views, clicks, feature usage) to PostHog's servers over HTTP.
The application only sends data out and PostHog processes it, so nothing runs inside the application's own server. PostHog is open source and self-hostable, but the hosted version is the common path.
Event-based analytics track any user action and build funnels, cohorts and retention charts.
Feature flags roll out a feature to a percentage of users, run A/B tests and serve as a kill switch.
Session replay records user sessions to debug UX issues.
