Next.js is a full-stack React framework that puts the frontend and the backend in one project. It was created by the Vercel team, and deploying it on Vercel is the path of least resistance. It is the application itself (frontend, backend, SSR, routing, build and deploy), where a bundler and dev server such as Vite only builds the frontend assets of a React SPA into `dist/`.

Server-side rendering (SSR) lets pages render on the server before reaching the browser, which is better for SEO and initial load, and pages that rarely change can be built ahead of time as static files (SSG).

API routes are backend endpoints defined in the same codebase and deployed as Vercel Functions (serverless).

Next.js is React-only and ships JavaScript to the browser by default, whereas Astro ships none by default and supports several frameworks.
