MemGPT is a memory system for long-running agents that gives them a virtual context, with a main memory (active) and an external storage (archived). It solves a fundamental problem: context windows are finite, but agent conversations can be infinite.

MemGPT is a memory system for long-running agents that gives them a virtual context, with a main memory (active) and an external storage (archived). It solves a fundamental problem: context windows are finite, but agent conversations can be infinite.

The design is inspired by the memory hierarchy of an operating system: the context window plays the role of RAM, and older memories are paged out to the archive and paged back in when they become relevant. The idea was adopted by ChatGPT (its memory feature) and LangGraph, with variants in MetaGPT, AutoGen and Smallville.
