A managed database is a database engine hosted and operated by a cloud provider. The user gets a connection string; the provider handles hardware, replication, backups, patching and scaling.
A managed database is a database engine hosted and operated by a cloud provider. The user gets a connection string; the provider handles hardware, replication, backups, patching and scaling.
Examples include Cloudflare D1 (SQLite at the edge, reached through bindings with no connection string at all), Neon (PostgreSQL), PlanetScale (MySQL), Supabase (PostgreSQL), AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL and DynamoDB (NoSQL). The tradeoff is less control over tuning and potential vendor lock-in, in exchange for zero operations burden.
