networks//gateway

A gateway is the first hop for any traffic destined outside the local network. The default gateway is the router's IP (192.168.1.1, for instance), and Docker has its own gateway (172.20.0.1, for instance) through which containers reach the outside world, applying Network Address Translation to outbound traffic.

The word means something narrower here than in a plant: this gateway forwards packets it does not read, while an industrial edge gateway understands every byte, translating a Modbus register into a named value published over MQTT.
