systems theory//from atom to token
From atom to token is a contrast between two ways engineering gains flexibility, in which an agent keeps the hardware very general and lets a symbolic sequence generated at runtime select which part of the world to use next. That is almost the inverse of much of classical engineering, which gains capability by changing physical constraints: materials, density, architectures, accelerators, memories, sensors and topologies.

Neither direction replaces the other. When an agent designs circuits, operates simulators, launches optimizations, interprets results and proposes materials, a loop closes between extremely flexible probabilistic software and extremely rigid matter, with sensors and actuators carrying it across as in any control loop. Matter bounds what can happen; the token decides which of those possibilities to try next (autoregressive control).
