Flux is the image generation model family of BFL (Black Forest Labs, founded by former Stability AI researchers), and the next generation after Stable Diffusion: the same research team (Rombach and colleagues), rebuilt on the DiT architecture instead of the U-Net, and as of 2024 it was among the highest-quality open-weight image models.

It comes in three tiers: schnell (fast, distilled), dev (full quality, open weights) and pro (commercial API). It is the practical default: most image generation workflows in 2024 and 2025 run Flux or SD3 rather than DALL-E or Imagen.
