Emergent coordination is cooperation whose exact protocol was not programmed in advance. Agents discover that leaving messages, specializing by task or reusing another agent's partial result improves their shared objective.

“Emergent” should not be allowed to mean “magical”. Coordination still needs a mechanism: a shared state, observable actions, compatible incentives or a channel through which information survives. Remove the shared medium or change the payoff, and the apparent collective behavior may disappear.
