Emergent coordination is cooperation whose exact protocol was not programmed in advance. Agents discover that leaving messages, specializing by task or reusing another agent's partial result improves their shared objective.

The word emergent should not be allowed to mean magical. Coordination still needs a mechanism: a shared state, observable actions, compatible incentives or a channel through which information survives, sometimes a side channel nobody designed as one. Remove the shared medium or change the payoff, and the apparent collective behavior may disappear.
