Cortex-R is ARM's real-time-profile core family, built for deterministic, low-latency execution in safety-critical systems. It bridges the gap between Cortex-M and Cortex-A, and it runs bare-metal or under an RTOS, never a full OS such as Linux.

Cortex-R is ARM's real-time-profile core family, built for deterministic, low-latency execution in safety-critical systems. It bridges the gap between Cortex-M and Cortex-A, and it runs bare-metal or under an RTOS, never a full OS such as Linux.

It is found in automotive ECUs (braking, airbags), hard-drive controllers and baseband modems, and it runs with zero jitter in applications such as ABS brakes, airbags, flight control and dialysis machines.

It features tightly coupled memory, fast interrupt response and dual-core lockstep for fault detection.

In lockstep, two identical cores run the same instructions and cross-check each other, and any mismatch triggers a fault.
