Cortex-A is ARM's application-profile core family, designed for high-performance workloads running full operating systems (Linux, Android, iOS). It is found in smartphones, tablets, laptops and cloud servers.

It features out-of-order execution, virtual memory and multi-level caches, and it is designed for OS time-slicing, orchestrating the processing of heavy data streams such as camera and networking.

Inside a SoC it is paired with integrated and NPU blocks.

An MPU chip carries between 1 and 12 Cortex-A cores.
