A bucket is a container for objects (files, blobs, assets) in cloud object storage: files are uploaded, a URL comes back, and they are served from it. There is no filesystem hierarchy, only a flat namespace with key prefixes that look like folders.

Buckets are cheap, durable and scale without limit, and they hold static assets (images, videos, PDFs), backups, logs and data lake files. Their APIs have converged on AWS S3's: most providers (Cloudflare R2, Google GCS, MinIO) implement S3-compatible endpoints. R2 adds zero egress fees to that compatibility.
