The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is a combinational circuit inside a core that performs integer addition, subtraction, the bitwise operations AND, OR and XOR, and shifts. Its results are written back to a register.

Floating-point math typically lives in a separate FPU. Modern cores have several ALUs executing in parallel, fed by the out-of-order scheduler.
