Do the arrays that give touch through the cortex keep working for years?
For about a decade so far. In five people with Utah arrays in the somatosensory cortex, followed for 24 implant-years in total, about 62 % of the electrodes still evoked sensations, and in one participant 55 % still did after ten years. The current needed to feel anything rose by about 3.5 microamperes a year as the tissue around the needles changed. No serious adverse events were recorded; the only problem was rare sensations that outlasted the stimulus by a few seconds.
